Fraud Prevention

Real conversations should always be the goal of political canvassing, with supporters found, and yard signs placed. Lots of them... Campaigns are losing money to the following fraudulent behaviors that do not serve the campaigns goals- don’t let it be you. Fox Bryant offers auditing services by request, to identify false campaign data and to assess overall ROI for organizations paying for labor in canvassing related programs and contracts.

Obvious GPS Fraud

This type is identified by comparing geotags from cell phone and tablet location data, with voter addresses. In the photo at right, a canvasser simply drove down the street, entering in fake surveys, or marking not home. Time stamps also show the time spent at each door, before moving to the next.

Covert Fraud

Here a canvasser will walk or in this case drive close enough to correct addresses for GPS to register and then input “Not Home” or a fake survey as if they talked to someone. To combat this, adept managers must watch time stamps and look for patterns such as data entries in perfect straight lines, or grouped in suspicious clusters, as well as conduct regular “spot checks.” If left unchecked this behavior will run up the bill quickly with high rates of doors per hour without a return and worst of all, fake survey responses.

“Spoofing” GPS

This is the term used to describe a canvasser using a GPS-altering app on their cell phone. These apps are typically used to cheat on games, which the player needs to physically move around, such as Pokémon GO. The canvasser can be anywhere, and the device GPS will show up where they place it. The screenshot at right shows homes too perfectly placed to be realistic, accomplished by “Spoofing”.

Illusions of Work

Getting paid to work less or not at all is a battle as old as time for employers. A good firm will hold the line and ensure that you're getting honest work for your investment.

Quality Standards

A paid canvassing agreement should assume the following:

  • Good Faith Attempts to talk to voters and conduct a survey was the goal of the canvassing and the contract.

  • “Lit Dropping” is not the assignment. Accurate surveys with real conversations will be conducted. GPS data being enabled is an established minimum requirement for any political canvassing with every major Walk-App/CRM having this capability.

  • Inaccessible/Gated/Not Located homes are not billed for or considered a part of the team total, as a Good Faith Attempt could not be made, they could not be canvassed.
